Microfluidic devices allow the precise manipulation of small volumes of fluid in a carefully controlled manner. Microfluidic chips typically contain specifically designed microchannels and chambers that may deal with as little as femtolitre volumes. These channels in the microfluidic ship allow mixing, separating and manipulation of fluids achieving multiplexing.

There are some applications where micro injection moulding is a suitable fabrication process, however this in only really suitable where many thousands of exactly replicated parts are required. For small production volumes, rapid prototyping, customised microfluidic chips e.g. for personalized medicine and 3D printing, and specifically micro 3D printing is a superior solution.
