Produce large, strong and accurate manufacturing tools in days rather than weeks
The Stratasys F870 is a large-format industrial FDM 3D printer for demanding factory-floor environments with accuracy and repeatability.
The Stratasys F870 is a large-format industrial FDM® 3D printer designed specifically for production tooling, fixtures, jigs, manufacturing aids and large functional prototypes. With a 1,000 × 610 × 610 mm build volume, the F870 enables manufacturers to produce large-scale components and tooling in a single build, reducing the need for multiple sections, assembly and outsourced manufacturing.
Built for demanding factory-floor environments, the F870 combines a fully heated 95 °C build chamber, integrated material drying, automatic material changeover and three interchangeable print heads. These capabilities provide manufacturers with greater control over print quality, productivity and material handling, while enabling continuous unattended operation for extended production runs. The F870 is used by manufacturers such as Toyota and Rivian.

The F870 is more than simply a large-format FDM printer. Stratasys has designed the system around the requirements of continuous production support, with features intended to reduce intervention, improve repeatability and accelerate the manufacture of tooling.
One of its most distinctive features is its fully heated 95 °C build chamber, which extends across the complete 1,000 mm build length. Maintaining a consistent thermal environment is particularly important when producing large parts, where thermal gradients can contribute to warping and dimensional variation. The heated chamber is especially beneficial when printing engineering materials such as Nylon 12CF.
A key capability of the F870 is its three interchangeable N-series print heads, allowing users to optimise the machine for different applications rather than relying on a single print configuration.
| N14 – Precision | The N14 print head is designed for applications where detail and dimensional control are priorities. It supports layer resolutions of 0.178, 0.254 and 0.330 mm and is suited to precision tooling, check gauges and detailed fixtures. |
| N20H – Carbon Fibre Composites | The hardened N20H print head is specifically designed for abrasive composite materials such as FDM Nylon 12CF. With a 0.25 mm layer resolution, it provides a combination of strength, stiffness and productivity for demanding tooling and structural applications. |
| N25 – High Throughput | The N25 is the F870’s high-speed print head, providing 0.33 mm layer resolution and up to 2× the throughput of the N14 when printing ASA. This makes it particularly attractive for large fixtures, manufacturing aids and applications where reducing production time is a priority. |
The ability to change print heads allows the same F870 platform to be configured for precision, composite or high-throughput production, providing flexibility as manufacturing requirements change.
Long-duration industrial FDM printing places considerable demands on material management. Moisture-sensitive thermoplastics can absorb moisture from the environment, potentially affecting print quality and consistency.
The F870 incorporates an integrated regenerative drying system with dedicated dryer bays. The system is designed to dry wet material and maintain dry material in optimal condition during operation, reducing operator intervention and helping minimise material-related variability during extended builds.
For production environments, reducing operator intervention can be just as important as increasing print speed.
The F870 uses 4,100 cm³ material spools and automatic material changeover, allowing the system to continue printing for extended periods without requiring an operator to replace material. This allows up to two weeks of continuous unattended printing, depending on the application and build requirements.
This capability makes the F870 particularly suitable for manufacturing organisations operating across multiple shifts or looking to maximise printer utilisation outside normal working hours.
The F870 supports a range of industrial thermoplastics selected for manufacturing applications, including:
| FDM Nylon 12CF™ | Nylon 12CF combines Nylon 12 with chopped carbon fibre to provide high stiffness and strength-to-weight performance. It is particularly suited to production tooling, fixtures and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) where reducing component weight while maintaining structural performance is important. |
| ASA | ASA provides a combination of strength, durability and UV resistance, making it suitable for manufacturing aids, fixtures, prototypes and components that may be exposed to outdoor environments. The F870’s N25 print head can provide up to 2× the throughput of the N14 for ASA, making it one of the key materials for high-productivity applications. |
| ABS-M30™ | ABS-M30 is an engineering-grade thermoplastic suitable for functional prototypes, manufacturing tools, fixtures and end-use parts. |
| Support Materials | Stratasys support materials can be used to produce complex geometries and internal features, with SR-35™ soluble support available for supported F870 configurations. |
The F870 is particularly well suited to the rapid manufacture of production tooling, allowing manufacturers to bring tools and fixtures in-house rather than relying on conventional machining, fabrication or external suppliers.
Applications include:
FDM Nylon 12CF makes the F870 particularly attractive for end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) and robotic applications.
Replacing heavy metal tooling with lightweight carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer components can reduce robot payload requirements and enable more application-specific tooling geometries.
Manufacturers can rapidly produce customised hand tools, lift assists, operator aids and safety equipment tailored to individual workstations.
Because designs can be modified and reprinted in-house, manufacturing teams can iterate ergonomic solutions without the lead times associated with conventional tooling.
With its one-metre build length, the F870 can produce full-scale prototypes in a single build, eliminating the need to split large components into multiple sections and subsequently assemble them.
The F870 can also be used to manufacture replacement components, covers, brackets, fixtures and other maintenance parts on demand, reducing dependence on external suppliers and helping minimise downtime.
The Stratasys F870 combines the large build capacity of an industrial FDM platform with features specifically designed for high-utilisation manufacturing environments. Its fully heated 95 °C chamber, integrated material drying, automatic changeover, interchangeable print heads and extended unattended operation make it particularly well suited to producing large tooling and manufacturing aids reliably and repeatedly.
For manufacturers looking to reduce tooling lead times, bring production aids in-house and replace heavy conventional tooling with lightweight composite alternatives, the F870 provides a production-focused additive manufacturing solution.
